Why Life Insurance Matters at Every Stage of Life

Learn how life insurance can help provide financial security for your loved ones as your responsibilities change.

Start with the people who depend on you and the bills that would remain if your income stopped. A useful coverage conversation begins with your family’s responsibilities, not a headline price.

List the needs before choosing a policy

  • Income your household would need to replace.
  • Mortgage or rent, debts, childcare, and education goals.
  • Final expenses and the needs of anyone who relies on unpaid caregiving.
  • Existing insurance and savings available for those purposes.

Match the policy to the need

Term life covers a specified period and generally has lower initial premiums than permanent coverage. Permanent policies can provide lifelong coverage when their requirements are met and may build cash value. Policy costs, guarantees, and funding requirements vary.

Ask what happens when the term ends, whether premiums can change, and which benefits are guaranteed. Review your beneficiaries after major life changes. Avoid canceling existing coverage before replacement coverage is in force and you understand its terms.

Your next step: Bring your current policy and a short list of household obligations to a consultation.

Can You Get Disability Insurance If You’re Self-Employed?

Discover the key questions self-employed individuals should ask about protecting their income.

If you work for yourself, an interruption to your ability to work can affect both household income and business cash flow. Disability income insurance may replace part of eligible earnings after a covered disability. It does not automatically cover every reason you cannot work.

Compare these five details

  • Definition of disability: How does the policy assess your ability to perform your occupation or another occupation?
  • Monthly benefit: How much can it pay, and how will the insurer verify your income?
  • Waiting period: How long must you wait before benefits begin?
  • Benefit period: How long can payments continue?
  • Exclusions: Which conditions, activities, or circumstances are limited or excluded?

Separate personal living costs from business expenses. A personal disability policy and business overhead coverage serve different purposes. Also compare any existing employer or association benefits before adding coverage.

Your next step: Write down essential monthly household expenses and how long your savings could cover them. Bring income records and existing coverage details when discussing options.

Dental vs. Vision Insurance: What’s the Difference?

Understand what each covers, how they work, and the details to compare for your needs.

Dental and vision coverage help with different expenses. A lower monthly premium is only one part of the comparison; what you can use, where you can use it, and what you still pay matter too.

Dental coverage

Check whether your dentist participates in the network. Compare deductibles, the plan’s annual benefit maximum, waiting periods, and the share you pay for preventive, basic, and major services. If you expect treatment soon, ask for a benefit estimate before relying on coverage.

Vision coverage

Check exam copays, frame or contact lens allowances, how often benefits renew, and any out-of-network limits. Ask whether you must choose between glasses and contacts in the same benefit period. Routine vision benefits are different from medical treatment for an eye condition.

Adult dental and vision benefits are not automatically included in every health plan. Review any coverage you already have before buying another plan.

Your next step: List your preferred providers and expected care. Compare total yearly premiums plus likely out-of-pocket costs.

Are Annuities a Good Option for Retirement?

Explore benefits, costs, and key considerations before deciding whether an annuity fits your future.

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. Depending on its terms, it can help provide income now or later. It is a long-term commitment, so first decide what you need the money to do and when you may need access to it.

Questions before you commit

  • When can income begin, and how long will it last?
  • Which amounts are guaranteed, and which are illustrations?
  • What fees, surrender charges, or withdrawal limits apply?
  • How much can you withdraw without a contract charge?
  • What happens to remaining value when you die?
  • How would the contract fit with emergency savings and other retirement income?

Fixed, indexed, and variable annuities have different features and risks. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer’s claims-paying ability. Early withdrawals may create contract charges and tax consequences. Review the actual contract and discuss tax questions with a qualified tax professional.

Your next step: Bring your income goals, time horizon, and liquidity needs to a conversation. Ask for fees and withdrawal rules in writing.
